Media image of the rock music in the Czechoslovak print media in the period of normalisation
Husák, Martin ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The rigorosum thesis "Media image of the rock music in Czechoslovak print media in the period of normalisation" outlines the basic characteristics and features of the media's coverage of rock music from 1969 to 1989, relating to factors which shaped common music journalism standards both for official publications as well as the unofficial area of 'samizdat' magazine production. The aim of this research focuses on the role of rock music in Czechoslovak sociological and cultural development as well as on the censorship systems that undermined the qualitative values and principles of music journalism as a whole. On one hand, information for this thesis has been gained through oral historical accounts, on the other hand other methodical elements have been utilised to fulfill the defined goals in a more comprehensive way, i.e. by analysing descriptive and comparative perspectives, using samples from relevant periodicals. At the conclusion, the findings are supported by an analysis and interpretation of selected cultural and music events. They are divided according to the type and extent of media coverage received by official and samizdat periodicals.
Modern lingual tendencies of czech music journalism
Morochovičová, Eliška ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Vedral, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the infiltration of modern tendencies into Czech music journalism. These tendencies represent a wholly new approach to the general standards of journalism, its language and stylistics. Young authors analyzed in this thesis prefer to take rather individualistic approach to music and its reflections. Based on the study of the New Journalism and gonzo journalism in American journalism and literature, and with the application of the general standards of Czech journalism I look into the particularities of those new tendencies, describe their development in various media and analyze the written language of a number of authors. In my thesis I concentrate on various music media dated from the 1990's until now. I analyze a couple of music magazines for interest groups, the modified forms of modern tendencies in music sections of the mass media and the contemporary form of individualistic journalism in music media on the Internet.
The history of music journalism from the year 1963 until now
Frýdová, Tereza ; Novotný, David Jan (advisor) ; Turek, Pavel (referee)
Diploma thesis The history of music journalism from the year 1963 until now examines the development of domestic music journalism from the year 1963 to the present in three crucial periods. The first period starts by the year 1963 because at this time the first professional music magazine Melodie in the Czechoslovak socialism republic developed. The second period that I study in my thesis was the 1990s, right after the Velvet Revolution, when many new music magazines were established, led by the magazine Rock & Pop. The third period I study in my thesis are the times after the year 2000 which are characterized by the development of online music journalism and by diminishing role of printed music magazines. In the theoretical part, I briefly describe every period by key historical characteristics and I also describe theirs dominant music magazines. In the last section, where I focus on the present time and the world of Internet, I focus also on the online music journalism as a new crucial field of the 21 century which fundamentally changed the work of music journalists. In the analytical part, I choose important music journalists for each period whose work is linked to the period, and with whom I conducted the interviews. The research method is qualitative research conducted in the form of semi-structured...
Analysis of contemporary rock magazines in the Czech Republic
Bartlová, Natálie ; Turek, Pavel (advisor) ; Hroch, Miloš (referee)
The bachelor thesis Analysis of Contemporary Rock Magazines Based in the Czech Republic analyzes the content representation of the domestic music scene compared to the international music scene using the example of Fakker, Headliner and Full Moon magazines. It also looks at how this representation affects the magazines' sales and success from the point of view of their chief editors. The analysis is done on 2018 issues, using the method of quantitative content analysis ("hard data"), which is supplemented with interviews with chief editors of these magazines ("soft data"). The theoretical part provides a short introduction to the history of music magazines in the Czech Republic before and after 1989, the year of the Velvet Revolution. Then the magazines Fakker, Full Moon and Headliner are summarized. The methods of quantitative analysis and of collecting data are explained in the practical part. These methods were used on three randomly selected issues of Fakker, Full Moon and Headliner from 2018. The data is recorded in a codebook. The quantitative analysis is followed by transcripts of interviews with the chief editors of Fakker (Petr "Ape" Adámek), Full Moon (Michal Pařízek) and Headliner ("Honza" Vedral). The summary outlines the results of the analysis and the contents of the interviews. As a...
The changes of critical discourse in the review "Melodie" on the edge of sixties and seventies of 20th Century, and early in eighties of 20th century.
VESELÝ, Jan
The bachelor thesis deals with a Czech musical monthly called Melodie. Particularly, it is focused on possible changes in critical discourse in the period from 60s to the first half of 80s of 20th century. The thesis also provides information concerning the origins of this popular periodical. In the first selected period (the turn of 60s and 70s), it propounds an objective view of the monthly's direction and, at the same time, an objective perception of its authors' work. The approaches of the authors are not only described separately but also in the context of selected sections. The thesis also highlights instances of contradictions between the content of articles and the prevailing discourse of the Communist government. In the second selected period (the first half of 80s), the thesis points to the coerced replacement of the management which was connected to a different direction of the periodical. The aim of the research is to describe in detail different approaches of the monthly Melodie during these two selected periods. To illustrate it, the thesis uses the analysis of particular texts written by chosen authors. However, the thesis also aims to provide a comprehensive view concerning the overall production of Melodie.
Czech music journalism 1990-1993: Analysis of selected periodicals and memories of its journalists
Ungerová, Kamila ; Skalecká, Veronika (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The field of study of this diploma thesis is the Czech music journalism in the period of early 1990s using the examples of newly established periodicals Rock & Pop (1990), Rock Report (1991, present name Report) and Spark (1992). I have chosen this topic with regards to unsatisfactory coverage of music periodicals which has enriched the Czech media market with a totally new form with no links to the time of normalisation. Furthermore, the periodicals have brought many foreign interviews to the general public and have also deepened the knowledge of hitherto neglected music genres - metal, punk and subsequent subgenres. The era of music publicistics from year 1990 on deserves the same elaborate expert analysis as in the time of normalisation in PhDr. Martin Husák Česká hudební publicistika zaměřená na rockovou hudbu v období normalizace. Although there have been some bachelor and diploma thesis concerning exclusively the periodical Rock & Pop, they have been limited mostly to paraphrases from Vojtěch Lindaur's work or to analysis of the changes the review in music publicistics had undergone. In case of the periodical Spark, the authors have analyzed its "language" or interpreted the tendencies of Czech music publicistics. I have not found a thesis which would analyze thoroughly the three chosen music...
